Welcome to Vowel Land!

Our primary goal in Vowel Land is to help learners master English front vowel sounds to prevent misunderstandings—such as saying it instead of eat, cut instead of cat, or pin instead of pen. In Vowel Land II and III, other central and back vowels will be tackled in a similar way.

Since the sounds of a new language are generally interpreted through the lens of the speaker’s mother tongue, Spanish speakers often equate the eight English diphthongs and twelve pure vowels with their own five Spanish vowels. This frequently leads to pronunciation difficulties. Achieving even basic intelligibility tends to be more challenging with pure vowels than with diphthongs.

Some diphthongs are also included, as they influence spelling-to-sound correspondences and are naturally embedded in the story. It’s important to note that while English and Spanish diphthongs differ, the Spanish vowel system does offer enough phonological contrasts to approximate the eight vowel oppositions found in English.

Teachers should bear in mind that the four Spanish pure vowels /i, e, a, u/ may appear to be rough equivalents of the English vowels /i, e, ʌ, u/. However, this apparent similarity can be misleading. Spanish learners must acquire new distinctions involving vowel length, lip posture, and muscular tension—features not present in their native vowel system.

An effective way to teach these features to young learners is through experiential learning. Vowel Land presents key pronunciation elements through the EMOPRON story format, which incorporates games, movement, visual aids, and songs. It focuses on front vowels such as /ɪ, iː, e, æ/ and selected diphthongs. This multisensory approach supports learners of all neurotypes, including those with neurodiverse profiles.
